Your Corporate Exit Strategy

ree

The toughest lesson I learned when I exited from my own company was if you don't have an exit plan before your entrance plan, i.e. an LLC, then you can planned to be over-worked, underpaid, and very likely fucked over in the end (pardon my French).

When I left my first successful career as a high school history teacher, my exit strategy had been two years in the making. By the time I left teaching, my business turned 1 and entered into my next career. It was a seamless transition I SOARed into as a result of having built a financial roadmap and plan, even if I didn't write anything down on paper because everything lives in my head. The only thing I forgot to do was create an exit strategy for the career I was entering into...in my defense, I thought it was my retirement plan, just like people that enter corporate without an exit strategy.

After 3 years and 2500 hours of coaching in Fortune 500 companies, I can confidently say this is a huge gap in the leadership development space, where the only exit strategy most people consider is allowing X amount of time to go by, i.e. reaching a certain age or number in an account. The business has leaders so focused on quarter over quarter, year over year, before you know it, a decade has gone by, and if you had a strategy, you would add more value to the business as much as it would make a huge impact on your personal life.

What I love about coaching Gen Z is their attitude towards entering corporate includes finding their succession plan along the way. They aren't obsessed with climbing a ladder or getting a title, and once we work together and they get a strategy for how to get the most out of the experience while keeping their eye on the exit strategy, their performance increases and overall feelings of satisfaction and success gives them a peace the previous generations can't seem to find.

If your entire identity is corporate, co-workers, and/or your title, it can feeling daunting to even consider exiting and walking away from whooo you have been for the majority of your life.

The truth is, if you aren't succession planning, someone higher up will do it for you. And if you remember that you are a soul, perhaps you would like to 'bump' into that exit plan sooner than you imagined...
